Frequently Asked Questions
What is a zoning ordinance?
A zoning ordinance is a set of rules that governs how land within the city can be used and developed. It determines what types of buildings and activities are allowed on a property, where they can be located, and how land can be used to promote public health, safety, and quality of life.
Why is Union City updating its zoning ordinance?
The current ordinance contains outdated language and organization that can be difficult to navigate. The update will improve clarity, modernize regulations, and align zoning with current planning goals.
How can I participate in the Planning and Zoning Ordinance Review and Update?
You can participate by:
· Attending public meetings and open houses
· Completing online surveys
· Submitting feedback through this website
· Signing up for project updates
Who is leading the Planning and Zoning Ordinance Review and Update?
The project is being led by Union City's Planning and Development Department with support from planning consultants at The Collaborative Firm.
What is a moratorium?
A moratorium is a temporary pause on certain types of development or land use approvals. It is used by a city to allow time to study an issue, gather public input, and consider updates to regulations before new approvals move forward.
Cities may use a moratorium to prevent development that could conflict with updated plans or new regulations being considered. This helps ensure that decisions made during a planning process align with long-term community goals rather than outdated rules.
A moratorium does not change zoning rules permanently. It is a short-term tool used during planning efforts.
How can I find out what my property is zoned?
Property zoning can be confirmed through the city’s interactive zoning map (https://ucgaopendata-unioncityga.hub.arcgis.com/apps/53ce9e8171434b42b025c1173b8a00d2/explore)(when available) or by contacting the Union City Planning Department. Staff can assist you with zoning classifications and permitted uses for your property.
Will there be opportunities for in-person engagement?
Yes. There will be pop-up events, stakeholder meetings, and community open houses throughout the project. Key dates will be posted on the project website.
Can I provide feedback online?
Yes. An online comment form and surveys will be available to gather your input at various stages of the project.
How will my input be used?
Community input will help shape key priorities, identify needed changes, and ensure the updated code reflects local values and development goals.
Where can I find project documents and updates?
All updates, meeting dates, draft documents, and engagement opportunities will be posted on this website.
